One of the projects I am currently working on is a large open space family room.
It's a spacious room with great opportunities, but some of the challenges includes various ceiling heights and
overall ceiling being very low as well as no natural light on the north side.
In my design plan to creating a perfect space for the family and various visitors / friends I want to create a good flow throughout the space reflecting the style of my client while also making it comfortable for the friends and out of town-visitors.
I have divided the space in different "activity zones" per my clients notes:
• TV Viewing/Media Area• Bar & Informal Buffet/Eating Area• Sitting area(s)• Project Area – “library”/ “cigar room”Client also has Personal sports memorabilia that I will incorporate in the space as an art display.
It is important to maximize the seating in the space
Most
days you might just have your family occupying the space, but you want to be
able to accommodate occasional guests as well. The same rule of thumb
applies to living area as dining room of catering to 6-8 people (or even more if you have the space). You might host a larger party where some people might like to watch a
game on big screen, or play a fun board game, while some guests might like to engage on more private conversation. Using ottomans as additional seating is very practical, as they can be easily put away when not needed.
