Amazing Transformation from School Bus into Mobile Grocery Store
Yesterday Re.Dzine participated in a Design Charrette where 4 deign teams created a concept for a Mobile Grocery Store. We had 4 hours to brainstorm on the concept and create a presentation board for the judges. The panel of judges picked our team's concept as a winner, so in few years there will be this wonderful Mobile Grocery Bus designed by our fabulous team including; Heidi Liu (Landscape Architect student), Korey White (Architect), Taylor Trask (Branding/ Graphic Design), and Heidi Mendoza/ Re.Dzine (Interior Designer) driving around the city of Denver.
THE GOAL
As America’s food system has shifted from smaller-scale family farms to larger corporate farms, and as more and more individuals move into suburbs and cities, Americans have become distanced from the food system and the gap has widened between Americans and their food sources. This has left the fundamental human need of healthy food out of reach for many. A significant number of Americans living in urban cities have sparse food options due to limited access to grocery stores or farmers’ markets. These areas are typically known as “food deserts” and disproportionately impact low-income and minority communities. Eating healthily has become a privilege reserved for those who are able to afford healthier options and has left others stranded in devastating “deserts” of food-like products, including fast food and highly processed or junk food options. Denver is no exception to this sad phenomenon and has a myriad of food deserts throughout its municipality and approximately 14% of families do not have access to a grocery store that offers healthy and affordable foods.
To counteract this startling trend, we introduce to you Any Street Grocery, a mobile, food-stamp authorized grocer that provides access to healthy foods and other essential products in the Denver Metro area communities that are most in need of these products, particularly those located within these urban food deserts. This mobile grocery store will offer the produce and products utilizing market based pricing and built in discounts to ensure the availability and affordability of fresh, healthy foods and essential products to those who want and need them most. Similar models that been proven to be effective and successful in other cities include: Fresh Truck, (Boston, MA), Arcadia Mobile Markets (Washington, D.C.), Truckin’ Tomato, (San Antonio, TX), and My Street Grocery, (Portland, OR).
THE DESIGN
In our design, we transformed a school bus into a mobile grocery store. Our goal was to create a clean, simple and modern look and let the produce take the spotlight.. Interior is completely constructed of plywood flexed by compression. Left side of the bus has the produce isles (60") which leaves the entire right side free for circulation (36"). Shelving is as well constructed from plywood and shelves accommodate reusable Plastic Containers. Point of Sales is in front and Refrigeration is at the back of the bus. At the end of each shelving units we have both flat screen TV's (advertising, displaying cooking demos) and chalkboard for pricing and specials. In the exterior we have panels that can be folded to display produce when bus is parked and this allows ADA access while the bus interior might be too narrow for wheelchair access. The overall branding and look displays sustainability, modern simple aesthetics with its light airy feel
