Kitchen Remodel

Most of the projects I work on are modern or at least contemporary, but occasionally I get requests for more traditional/ transitional looking spaces, like this kitchen for a retired couple in Denver.

Lots of issues; too little counter space, worn out cabinetry and counter tops, several styles of appliances making the space NOT look very cohesive, not enough light, upper cabinets between dining space and kitchen are blocking the little natural light there is available. just very unpractical, and who ever planned this kitchen did not consider this an important space at all. Rest of the house has a very open plan.

Below are my 3 concept ideas for client, who does not want to change the layout or go into heavy duty construction. They initially wanted just new cabinets and countertops, but I can gve them so much more:

Concept #1

In this concept I placed the oven under the counter where the stove top is and the microwave below the upper cabinets to give the client a little  more counterspace. Client has gas top and wants electric one, so I gave them one with  down draft system. Since I am suggesting removing the upper cabinets between kitchen and dining room, last thing we want is a hood blocking the opening. I also want to move the refrigerator to the very end corner. I want to have paneled doors for both refrigerator and dishwasher to create more cohesive look. If you have a large kitchen having exposed appliances is fine, but in a small kitchen with so few cabinets you do not want to have all the different surface materials. I also added a bar height little peninsula with chairs and pendants above it. Raisin the bar surface creates some privacy to hide the site of pots and pans and dishes. I addressed the lighting issue by adding under cabinet lighst throughout the kitchen. Adding a crown molding gives the space a nice sophisticated look (click on the images to enlarge)

Concept  #2

This version has the bar height surface replaced with lowered additional counter and storage. This is great way to place trays and food and other serving dishes during dinner. Even though the client has formal dining room, this is the area where they mostly eat the dinner with smaller groups.

My other suggestions consisted making a built-in bench in the nook by bay window (no rendering here) with table a 2 chairs, different locations for appliances, and leaving applliances exposed, in case they don't care for the idea of paneled doors.
